The City: Çeşme
Çeşme Castle
The castle was built in 1508, and it has all the characteristics of Ottoman architecture. The finds unearthed in the village of Çeşme-Ildırı are on display in the castle's museum. This historical structure is used for the International Çeşme Music Festival, which is held from 2-7 July every year.
Çeşme Museum
A total of 477 items are displayed in the Archaeological Museum of Çeşme Castle: 320 archaeological pieces, 126 ethnographic pieces, and 31 coins. They were discovered in the district center of Alaçatı and the Kalemburnu region.
Caravanserai
The caravanserai, built in 1529 by Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent, consists of two stories. The rectangular structure has a central courtyard with shops, storage depots, and other rooms around the perimeter. This historical building is now being used as a hotel and provides excellent shopping opportunities for those interested in gift items, leather clothing, or high-quality Turkish rugs. At night the restaurants, bars, and discos surrounding the inn make for a lively atmosphere.
The Mastic Trees
Discovered 6,000 years ago, the mastic trees of Çeşme are definitely worth seeing. Rakı (an alcoholic drink) is flavored with mastic, and mastic jelly is made from these trees. Mastic trees are also used in the manufacture of medicine and paint. The doctors of ancient Greece made a variety of medicines from this plants for rabies, snake bites, and stomach, liver, and intestinal conditions. After the 10th century, the fame of the mastic tree spread beyond Sakız Island to the whole world. The plant is now used for a variety of purposes in 25 different national pharmaceutical firms.
Çeşme Hot Springs
This is one of the most interesting and rare places in the world. The water temperature is around 58°C, and it contains sodium chloride, potassium chloride, and magnesium chloride. The waters can be helpful for people suffering from a variety of health conditions. There are modern facilities in the vicinity of the hot springs featuring thermal pools and baths. Transportation to the springs is provided by the Çeşme buses, which run from Üçkuyular.
Şifne (Reisdere) Thermal Spring and Mud Baths
Located 5 km northeast of the Çeşme Hot Springs on a small peninsula in the Şifne Bay, the thermal springs have accommodations and restaurants nearby. There is a large common pool with benches in the water. The water contains sodium, chlorine, and calcium and the 38°C waters are radioactive (5.3 eman). Like the Çeşme Hot Springs, the waters are helpful for a variety of health conditions.
